New River and Other Poems is a unique collection of poetry and photographs by North Carolina writer Maurice Thomas. Using vivid, composite images of the Appalachians interspersed with poems, he conveys a haunting sense of time and place, past and present, of longing and loneliness, of people seeking certainty in a world of change. The poems trek the creeks, rivers, and hills of Western NC and ultimately end by the river Thames in London, a spiritual home for the author. Thomas divides his time between his native Union County and Sparta, NC, nestled among the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains. He is married to fellow English Professor Pamela Reeves Thomas whose family was among the earliest settlers of what is today Alleghany County which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2009. The Thomas children are Colin and Lauren. Many of the poems have appeared earlier in numerous publications but are collected here for the first time.
The New River is ancient, 65 million years by most estimates, older than the Appalachians through which it flows. Filled with rare plants and lush scenery, it is today a popular recreational designation with much of it protected as a scenic river and national park. Beginning near Blowing Rock, NC, it flows north through Virginia then cuts through the immense New River Gorge of West Virginia before turning west to join the Kanawha and spilling into the Ohio, Mississippi, and finally the Gulf of Mexico. The author supports the work of the NCNR (National Committee for the New River). Details at www.ncnr.org.
